So, now you have to buy them elsewhere, usually on eBay. The Explorer trackball has become very expensive and there is quite some degree of risk in buying on eBay. ·        Some sellers do not even say that their trackball is going to work when you receive it! Some sellers do not know how to properly inspect and test the trackball to determine if it is in excellent or in poor condition. ·        Many do not offer enough detail so that you know for certain what you are going to get. ·        It has been years since Explorer trackballs have been manufactured. Most have by now seen quite a bit of use (even if the Logo still looks good). That means many of those for sale on eBay may have worn bearings! Flat spots develop on the three steel bearings that the red ball rides on. This makes the ball hard to turn and at times catches. The main feature of a trackball is the ease and precision with which the cursor moves. Worn bearings destroy that ability and make the trackball almost useless! Even the honest sellers may not know (or to know how) to look for worn bearings. ·        Please be careful when you buy a used Explorer that you do not get one with worn bearings. They can be repaired, but, it will cost you about $40 to have the repair made. ·        Be wary of the auctions with few details about the condition of the trackball and those with few pictures, generic pictures, and poor quality pictures. Be especially careful with the auctions that say ‘Sold As Is’ and ‘No Returns’ – there may be a reason for this that is not mentioned! ·        Also, if it is not offered on the auction page, ask the seller - try to get some guarantee that it is going to work properly – even if it is only for seven days. ·        A few sellers will say that the trackball will be operational (not DOA) when it arrives. What happens if it does not work well when you get it or if it quits 10 days or 30 days after you buy it? We don’t know how these trackballs have been stored or handled for the years since manufacture. Even buying one that is still in the ‘sealed’ package may be a mistake. Neither the seller nor the buyer knows for certain that it is going to work. What happens if the buyer finds that it does not work? I have bought new ones still sealed in the retail package that did not work! ·        I have bought plenty of used ones that were not nearly as good as advertised!
